The main culprits of human trafficking in Ghana are, simply put, religious beliefs and cultural traditions. Its quite common in Africa for a female as young as eight to be given away to someone in another village or town in order to pay off a debt or a loan that a family member is unable to pay. In some parts of Africa it’s customary to “donate” children to the fetish priest in order to receive blessings from the gods. The problem comes into play where it always does- in the fact that innocent children are being forced to work without pay, they’re malnourished, and subjected to physical as well as sexual abuse. Some people though, feel as though the women and children are being done no harm. There are those who believe that the children are being given over to the needs of the chosen “men of God” and therefore are simply rendering sacrifices in exchange for good fortune or a blessing. Shrines such as the Trokosi, the Ewe,Fiashidi and the Woryokwe are strongly opposed to the laws in place banning the practices. Although this form of ritual servitude was outlawed in 1998, the practice is still commonplace in many parts of Ghana. From the standpoint of a majority of the world though, ritual servitude is wrong and infringes on the human rights of others and should be stopped.
