Currently, the majority of human trafficking victims are women. The issue still exists today and no matter how many arrests, it still remains a problem. Most trafficking victims are now from impoverished backgrounds. They often cross the border illegally with fraudulent documents. Traffickers entice their victims with the prospect of jobs, education or marriage. The modernized version of Human Trafficking is prostitution or stripping. They work long hours in nightclubs or even on the corners of famous streets where men come and pick up the woman they choose. Some labor is forced and some is voluntary. It remains difficult to identify trafficked victims who may be scared to come forward with the truth or report domestic abuse. Activists still do try to reach out and help people in need of escaping the cruelty of Human Trafficking.
What surprised us about studying this issue was discovering how many places allowed people to be used
as a piece of property for unlimited sexual intercourse. A lot of people in certain areas did not respect victims enough to help or even say its time to put an end to the inhumane issue. Not only did many women and children suffer, but even if ended, could still be taken and used. The defender did a great job with trying her best to help victims in Africa. We find it amazing that as someone who witnessed it first-hand, had the opportunity to escape, prosper and spread her story to others in order for everyone to believe that they can be saved.
This issue taught us to be grateful for the country we live in and its government system. We recognize that human trafficking may happen here but at least it’s not legal. If there was someone trafficking women or children our law enforcement would do their best to tackle the issue. Luckily it is illegal here and looked down upon to rape women and especially children. This taught usthat there are many people out there besides in Ghana being trafficked. It is sad to learn that this is normal in other parts of the world young women and children get taken advantage of. In some shrines they put the victims on drugs so they are not aware of their life around them. Overall this is a topic that is not talked about enough to be fixed, especially in other countries. This project taught us to be leaders and help others that have experienced tragedies.
What we find to be most admirable about Juliana Dogbadzi is the fact that she is actively helping others who are currently where she was. She doesn’t allow the fear or shame she may have to interfere with the desire she then had to help herself and the one she now has to help the women still entrapped in the shrines of ritual slavery. She has been extremely courageous and self sacrificing in that she gives freely of her time and resources to help others. Examples of people like Juliana are what motivate us to join the human rights struggle as well as the fact that many of the simple joys of life, that should be allotted to every individual, aren’t given to some people. The fact that we can help to give someone those joys, is unable to be compared with any other feeling in the world.
